Cypress Hills Visitor Centre
Elkwater, Alberta, LEED® Certified
The Cypress Hills rise gently into a plateau above the prairies spanning the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. This unique landscape of pine-crested highlands, coulees, and valleys are characterized by cool forests, lush wetlands, and grasslands. At 600 meters, the Park is the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and Labrador.
The year-round Visitor Centre which opened in 2008, sits along the south shore of Elkwater Lake in the Elkwater townsite and is the focal point for visitor services in the park.
Energy efficiency was a main focus in SAHURI's building design and some of the technologies incorporated were solar assisted heating and lighting, low flow nozzles and fixtures, and high efficiency glazed windows. The Visitor Centre accommodates fascinating cultural exhibits that highlight the Interprovincial Park and its peoples' history and environment.
